Death toll rises to 45

International Desk: At least 45 people have been killed by devastating hits of Hurricane Ian in various cities in the southeastern state of Florida. The entire state has been devastated by the storm, Reports CNN.

Hurricane Ian, already believed to be the deadliest storm in US history, slammed into southwest Florida on Friday.

According to the US National Hurricane Center, Ian made landfall at the Cayo Costa coast, west of Fort Myers. Wind gusts were 240 kilometers per hour in Fort Myers and surrounding areas at that time.

The storm continued to move southward on Thursday after making landfall in Florida on Wednesday and weakened to a normal hurricane in North and South Carolina, CNN reported citing the NHC.

The high tide and torrential rains also caused flooding in cities far from the sea, including Orlando and Florida. Fort Myers and its nearby city of Naples suffered the most damage from Yan.

The storm caused severe power outages across Florida. More than 1.6 lakh customers are currently without power in various districts of the state.

According to the state weather bureau, all cities in the state were inundated with floodwaters and flooding on such a large scale has not been seen in Florida before.

The US President Joe Biden on Friday referred to Hurricane Ian as one of the 'greatest natural disasters' in US history. He said in a statement, 'Devastation of such magnitude has not been seen in recent US history. It may take years to recover the amount of damage that has been caused.

He also promised that all kinds of support will be given to the state of Florida from the central government.
