A shooting near a college stadium in Tallahassee, Florida, left 11 people with gunshot wounds on Saturday night, according to officials.
Six of the victims were juveniles, including an 11-year-old child, Tallahassee Police Chief Lawrence Revell told reporters at a press conference late Saturday.
The shooting occurred just hours after a homecoming football game at the stadium, where the Arkansas–Pine Bluff Golden Lions defeated the Florida A&M Rattlers 31–28. Authorities have not yet determined whether the shooting was connected to the game.
In addition to those shot, the grandmother of one of the victims was injured while fleeing the scene near Florida A&M University's Bragg Memorial Stadium.
One victim is in critical condition, while three others sustained serious injuries. The remaining eight are in stable condition. Revell confirmed that one of the injured victims was a Florida A&M student.
The police chief said the shooting likely stemmed from an altercation involving two or three individuals. The department's Violent Crimes Unit is leading the ongoing investigation.
“We're still working the scene. Our detectives, our sergeants, our forensic personnel are all on scene and processing this as we go, taking in as much information as they can,” Revell said.
He added that investigators were working to establish exactly what happened and identify those responsible.
“As our detectives work to determine exactly what happened and identify those responsible, we remain committed to getting answers for these families,” he said.
Tallahassee Mayor John Dailey described the incident as a “truly horrific and heartbreaking tragedy.”
“Tonight and in the days ahead, the FAMU family is not alone. Our entire community stands with you,” Dailey wrote on X.
Florida A&M University said in a statement late Saturday that it was aware of an incident near its campus on Perry Street on the evening of October 24.
“Our hearts go out to the victims and all those affected by this tragic incident. While the campus remains safe, individuals are encouraged to avoid the area to allow law enforcement to conduct its investigation,” the university said.
Police continue to investigate the shooting.
