Suu Kyi gets 3 years jail

International Desk: A court in military-ruled Myanmar sentenced ousted leader Aung San Suu Kyi to 3 years in prison on Thursday for violating the country's official secrets law. The military overthrew the civilian government in a coup last year and several members of the government, including Suchi, were arrested, reports Al Jazeera.

At least 20 criminal charges filed against Suu Kyi since the military overthrowing the civilian government in February 2021. Earlier, the military court of Myanmar sentenced her to 11 years imprisonment on charges of treason, corruption and other charges. She was sentenced to 6 more years in four corruption cases last August.

Suu Kyi's three-year sentence was announced on Tuesday, a military official said. At the same time, her economic adviser, Sean Turnell, was also convicted and sentenced to three years in prison.

Turnell, an associate professor in economics at Sydney’s Macquarie University, was arrested five days after the coup in February 2021. However, the Australian embassy was not allowed to attend his trial and no translator was kept with him during the trial.

They were each sentenced to three years in prison, a source said Reuters. But Turnell and Aung San Suu Kyi previously denied the allegations in the case during testimony in August.
