Two get life imprisonment

Staff reporter : A court in Dhaka has sentenced two persons to life term imprisonment over the murder of Sagira Morshed in the capital's Siddheswari.

Judge Mohammad Ali Hossain of Dhaka Special Sessions Judge Court passed the order on Wednesday.

The lifers are Maruf Reza and Anas Mahmud. Beside the jail term, the convicts were also fined Tk 50,000 each, in default, they will have to serve 6 months more in prison.

Three other accused are Dr Hasan Ali, brother-in-law of Sagira Morshed, his wife Sayedatul Mahmuda Alias Shaheen, and Montu Morol--in the case were acqutted from the case charge as their charges were not proved.

On July 25, 1989, Sagira, 34, was going to Viqarunnisa Noon School on the capital's Bailey Road by a rickshaw to pick up her daughter Saharat. When the rickshaw reached the school, some muggers shot and killed her. Her husband Abdus Salam Chowdhury filed a murder case against unnamed people with Ramna Police Station the same day.

On January 16, 2020, the investigating officer of the case, Police Bureau of Investigation (PIB) inspector Rafiqul Islam, submitted a chargesheet against four people in the court.

The investigation officer mentioned in the chargesheet that accused Shaheen had a rift with Sagira Morshed’s family. Besides, her mother-in-law disliked Sagira, and there was also a conflict between Sagira and Shaheen over educational qualifications.
