Sun News Desk: A condemnation resolution has been passed in the United Nations General Assembly on Thursday regarding the annexation of four regions of Ukraine to the Russian Federation. A total of 143 countries including Bangladesh voted against Russia.

Bangladesh voted in favor of the resolution considering sovereignty, respect for territorial integrity, peaceful settlement of all disputes, UN Charter and other fundamental principles.

Some 35 countries, including India and China, abstained from voting on the resolution. Belarus, North Korea, Syria and Nicaragua opposed the proposal along with Russia.

This is the highest vote against Russia since the invasion in Ukraine.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs issued a statement explaining the Bangladesh vote on Thursday morning.

According to the statement, Bangladesh strongly believes that sovereignty, respect for territorial integrity, peaceful settlement of all disputes, the objectives and principles of the UN Charter must be adhered to by all.

Bangladesh also believes that the sovereignty and territorial integrity of any country within internationally recognized borders should be respected.

In the statement, Bangladesh emphasized the requirement for the international community to take a similar stand against the occupation of Palestinian and other Arab lands by Israel.

The statement also said that Bangladesh is deeply concerned about the continuation of the conflict in Ukraine and its global socio-economic impact.

Bangladesh believes that hostilities like war or economic sanctions, counter-sanctions cannot bring prosperity to any nation. Dialogue, negotiation and mediation are the best ways to resolve crises and disputes.

A strong believer in multilateralism, Bangladesh supports the United Nations. Bangladesh calls on all parties to resolve the dispute through peaceful means and to refrain from taking any action that may endanger international peace and security.

In the statement, Bangladesh called for an end to war and an end to the arms race for the good of mankind.

However, Bangladesh voted in favor of Russia in the second resolution on humanitarian assistance among the four resolutions. But Dhaka abstained from voting on the first resolution and in Geneva.
