"Democracy becomes strong when the media is strong: Fakhrul

Staff Reporter

LGRD Minister Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has emphasized that an independent, responsible and strong media is significant for establishing a sustainable democracy.

"Democracy becomes strong when the media is strong. However, it requires a collective and responsible role from the government, media owners, journalists, and state institutions to build an effective democratic environment," he said.

He was speaking as the chief guest at a seminar titled "Role of Media in Sustainable Democracy", organized by the Television Editors Council at the Holiday Inn Hotel in the capital on Friday (August 7).

The minister noted that democracy is a culture rather than just an election-centric process. He stressed the need to foster tolerance, respect differing opinions, and strengthen democratic practices alongside state institutions.

Emphasizing that telling the truth is the media's primary duty, Mirza Fakhrul urged journalists to avoid self-censorship and remain committed to objective reporting. He also highlighted the necessity of ensuring job security, fair wages, and an independent working environment for journalists.

Information and Broadcasting Minister Zahir Uddin Swapon, who spoke as the keynote speaker, remarked that the July mass uprising has opened new doors of opportunity for the nation. He urged the media to play a crucial role in building trust between the government and the public.

Chaired by Television Editors Council Convener Dr. Abdul Hai Siddique, the seminar was attended by Dhaka University Vice-Chancellor Prof. Dr. A. B. M. Obaidul Islam, Principal Information Officer Syed Abdal Ahmad, National Press Club President Hasan Hafiz, along with senior journalists and media representatives.
