Blast in Moghbazar rattles the capital

On Sunday evening the capital’s Moghbazar area was left in a state of shock as an explosion rocked its way into the area leaving a number of people and establishment devastatingly wrecked in its wake.

The explosion took place at around 7:30pm on Sunday June 27, at Shawarma House near retail chain Aarong (Moghbazar branch) and the area’s Bishal Center, partially damaging both establishments causing its glasses to shatter.

Apart from that, seven adjacent buildings and three buses were damaged due to the blast.

Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Commissioner Shafiqul Islam, after visiting the spot has reported of atleast 50 people being injured as a result, who have been taken to receive treatment Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH), Sheikh Hasina National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery, and other hospitals.

7 people have already been confirmed dead due to the blast.

The exact cause of the blast still remains unknown although the DMP chief has said that it was not caused by a bomb as it has left no splinters in the bodies of the injured as a bomb blast would.

Shafiqul Islam added in his report to the press that "Fire service will form probe committee to investigate the incident. They are expert on such issue. They will investigate and give their opinion,".

As of Monday June 28, Inspector General of Police (IGP) Benazir Ahmed has stated that despite the explosion not seeming to be that caused out of malice, the possibilities of it are not to be ruled out until confirmed by the bomb disposal unit of Counter Terrorism and Transnational Crime unit who are now looking into the case.

Eventhough, Titas Managing Director told TBS of there being no chances of gas accumulation in the restaurant resulting to a gas leakage, the present smell of methane gas at the spot cannot negate the possibility of it either.
