Strong Earthquake in Turkey: Six killed.

International Desk:

A strong earthquake hit Turkey killing six and at least 202 were injured.

the quake struck with a magnitude of up to 7.0 at around 1150 GMT and people ran out in panic. The quake struck the AegeanSea on Friday. The tidal waves, resulted from the quake slammed into coastal areas and Greek islands.

Reports from Turkish officials said that many people are stuck in the rubble of collapsed buildings. Izmir, one of the main tourist regions of Turkey is badly affected and other provinces are partially damaged. At least 20 buildings came down and many are rescued from the wreckage.

Turkey is among the most earthquake-prone countries in the world as the major fault-lines crisscross here. In August 1999, a devastating quake with a magnitude of 7.6 struck Izmir killing more than 17000.

The sea levels rose as a result of the quake and many people went inland. Social media footages showed debris were floating through the streets when a small tsunami struck.

Residents of the affected areas are suggested by the rescue teams to be careful and not to enter buildings that might have been damaged in the initial quake, as they could collapse in a strong aftershock.

Turkey's Disaster and Emergency Management Presidency, or AFAD said that the rescue and search efforts were going on.
