International Desk: Mikhail Gorbachev, the last leader of the Socialist Soviet Union, has passed away aged 91.

He died in hospital on Tuesday after suffering from a serious and long-term illness, reports the Russian news agency

According to BBC and Reuters, Gorbachev died on Tuesday evening after a long illness. He will be buried next to his wife Raisa at the Novodevichy Cemetery in Moscow.

Russian news agency Interfax reported that Russian President Vladimir Putin mourned Gorbachev's death.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said Russian President Vladimir Putin expressed his deepest condolences over Gorbachev's death. Tomorrow he will send a telegram of condolence to his family and friends.

Mikhail Gorbachev was both admired and despised in the world. He was once a communist leader, came to power in 1985 at the age of 54 and was appointed general secretary and chief leader of the country's Communist Party. When communism fell in the Soviet Union in 1990, he was appointed the country's first president.

He signed an arms control agreement with the United States. He was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1990. He made an ill-fated attempt to return to political life in 1996. Gorbachev ran for president in a changed Russia, but received only 5 percent of the vote. Gorbachev was once a fierce critic of the current President of Russia, Vladimir Putin.

However, when Russia annexed Crimea in 2014 on the orders of Putin, he was on Putin's side. Putin once again showered Gorbachev with praise on his 90th birthday last year.
