As a deadly pandemic continues to plague the entire country along with the world, getting a hold on vaccines from abroad continues to remain unprogressive.
Bangladesh received about 1.1 million Sinopharm vaccines from China, and 100,000 Pfizer doses from the Covax program, an international initiative led by Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance, the Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness Innovations, and the World Health Organization.
Apart from those, which will aid in covering about 600,000 people, the country has yet to make certain of receiving more vaccines from abroad to continue the inoculation initiative.
Bangladesh was promised to be given a total of 20 million vaccines (15 million Sinopharm shots from China and 5 million Sputnik-V shots from Russia) by June as per Foreign Minister Dr A.K Abdul Momen.
However, that seems to be unlikely now as stated by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
As a result, negotiations to bring in the vaccines by next month are going on with Beijing and Moscow.
Additionally, the hopes of receiving 30 million shots of the AstraZeneca vaccine from India has also been trampled, as the country’s dire covid situation prevented it from procuring beyond the initial 700,000 shots it sent.
However, amidst the uncertainties, the foreign minister on June 11 announced the procurement of more than 1 million AstraZeneca vaccines likely by August through the Covax initiative.
The vaccine will cover a major half of the 1.5 million people requiring their second dose, despite not covering all of them.
