72nd Anniversary of Awami League

Sun News Desk: Today is the 72nd founding anniversary of Bangladesh Awami League, the party that led the country to independence through the Great Liberation War. The party was established on 23 June 1949 as East Pakistan Awami Muslim League in the traditional Rose Garden of Old Dhaka. At the time of its establishment Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman was imprisoned. He was made Joint General Secretary.

On the other hand, although the All Pakistan Awami Muslim League was formed centrally, it was later renamed as 'Awami League' to reflect the non-communal political ideology. After the victory in the 1954 elections, the word Muslim was dropped from the name of the party in the council of the Awami Muslim League held in 1955. And the two words East Pakistan were omitted from the time of Bangladesh's war of independence. After the declaration of independence in Bangladesh, the name Bangladesh Awami League was used in all the papers of the expatriate government. The boat has been the election symbol of the party since 1980. Later, this organization, one of the oldest in the country, became the organization of the masses of the country by leading every democratic, political and social movement including the war of independence and liberation of Bangladesh.

Detailed programs are taken up by the team every year on the occasion of the day. Due to the coronavirus situation, various programs have been organized in compliance with the hygiene rules.

These programs include hoisting party and national flags at all offices of the country including the central office at sunrise on this day. On the same day at 9 am at Dhanmondi No. 32 paid homage to the portrait of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman with flowers. Discussion meeting on Bangabandhu Avenue at 3 pm. Prime Minister and Awami League President Sheikh Hasina will virtually join the meeting from Ganobhaban. Besides, a delegation of the Awami League Central Executive Parliament will pay homage at the tomb of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman in Tungipara at 10.30 am today.

Political experts and eminent people think that the achievement of Awami League is the achievement of democratic people of Pakistan period, the achievement of this party is the achievement of Bangladesh. The party has implemented what it deems necessary for the nation. From language movement to liberation war, Awami League has played the highest role in the formation of Bangladesh by leading all movements from the front. Despite the conspiracies of the anti-nationals since independence, the Bangladesh Awami League has risen from the rubble and established democracy by ending the dictatorship.

Former General Secretary of Awami League Late Syed Ashraful Islam commented on the party, saying that Awami League is not only the oldest and largest political party in the country, it is also the mainstream of democracy and non-communal ideology. From its inception till now, the Awami League has been continuously advancing this trend of our socio-politics through various movements and struggles.

He termed the party as one of the oldest organizations in the country and said that the Awami League, which was anointed with great glory in achieving language, freedom, democracy and independence, was on a mission to liberate the unwavering Bengali nation in its decades-long journey of peace, prosperity and change. The Awami League is one of the oldest, non-communal, largest and leading political parties in the country. And the work of building a non-communal Bangladesh was first started by Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. Earlier, Bangabandhu had initially thought of forming a non-communal political party in Pakistan. He thought that Pakistan was gone, there was no need for communal political institutions. There will be a non-communal political organization, which will have a fair manifesto.

In this regard, Bangabandhu wrote in his 'unfinished autobiography', I thought that Pakistan has become a communal political institution and there is no need for it. There will be a non-communal political organization, which will have a fair manifesto. I thought, the time has not come yet. So those who are outside have done it thoughtfully.

Historian, writer and folklorist Shamsuzzaman Khan evaluates this group and writes that the Awami League is exploiting the unscientific and geographically and ethnically bizarre Bengali people of East Bengal and other minorities in a colonial manner. Rakha is a hugely popular political party formed through continuous protests, resistance and mass struggles. The language movement of '52, the United Front elections of '54, the anti-military movement of Ayub, the establishment of communal harmony after the riots of '74,

Professor. Harun-ur-Rashid wrote in an article, “Since its inception, the Awami League has been at the forefront of politics for the last 61 years. The history of Awami League is the history of struggle, creation, achievement and development. The Awami League was the first effective opposition party in Pakistan. Not only that, the journey of Awami League started as a true and uncompromising representative of the interests of Bengalis. At that time it was not easy to form any opposition party in the state of Pakistan. Ignoring the bloodshot eyes of the ruling party and all obstacles, the Awami League was not only established as an opposition party on that day, its popularity also started increasing very fast.

Despite a failed attempt to erase the Awami League from history by assassinating Bangabandhu and his family in 1975, the party returned to power on June 23 after winning the 1996 elections under the leadership of incumbent Sheikh Hasina through a long 21-year struggle. After another catastrophe after January 11, 2001 and 2006, the Awami League won three-quarters of the seats in the December 29, 2008 elections and regained the responsibility of running the state. The party has been running the government for three consecutive terms in the history of Bangladesh after winning the general elections on January 5, 2014 and December 30, 2016.
