Staff Correspondent: Bangladesh and neighboring India have been hanging on to the Central Teesta River for a long time. Deputy Minister for Water Resources Enamul Haque Shamim has said that the Teesta water agreement will be signed in the future just like the enclave agreement was signed by Bangabandhu's daughter Sheikh Hasina.
He was speaking at the inaugural session of the Regional Char Conference at the Begum Rokeya Auditorium in Rangpur on Sunday (December 5th).
The Deputy Minister for Water Resources said the government has taken up a master plan around the Teesta. If this project is implemented, the socio-economic background of millions of people on the banks of the Teesta will change, including the response to disasters such as floods and droughts. Modern cities and tourist centers will be developed.
He said the Teesta river and chars would be excavated along with the construction of satellite towns and tourist centers. As a result, besides producing crops worth Tk 20,000 crore every year, thousands of houses will be protected from erosion. Then there will be no river erosion and waterlogging. The government is working to ensure bumper yields of crops in the region. The implementation of this project will greatly improve the socio-economic condition of the people. There will be employment opportunities for people.
Former Governor of Bangladesh Bank Dr. Atiur Rahman presided over the function and Shamim Haider Patwari MP, German Chief of Party Mark Nosback and others spoke on the occasion.
Enamul Haque Shamim said that Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina thinks about the next generation, that is why she wants to build the next Bangladesh with world-class living facilities. That is why he has announced the implementation of Delta plan-2100. The Ministry of Water Resources will implement most of the work of this master plan. If this master plan is implemented, there will be no problem with river erosion and waterlogging in the whole country.
The Deputy Minister further said I am also a resident of the river broken area. But now there is no river erosion. Due to Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, the area affected by river erosion has now been turned into a tourist destination.
Later, the Deputy Minister visited various offices and residential buildings of the Rangpur Water Development Board and inquired about them.
