The Great War of Liberation of 1971 is the best event in the long political history of Bangladesh. This December, the social, political and economic dream of the Bengali nation for thousands of years was fulfilled through a historic event of armed freedom struggle under the leadership of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.

On the 16th of this month came the unforgettable glorious final victory of the war of liberation. Bengalis gained worldwide recognition as an independent nation. The nation has got its own territory and national flag emblazoned with the red sun on its green chest. The nationalism that developed on the basis of language, the freedom declared after a bloody war is fulfilled on this day.

This December is also a month of mourning for the bereaved as it is the fulfillment of a thousand years old dreams of Bengalis as well as the achievement of many young lives and respect of mother and sister.

In the same month, the anti-independence forces, with the help of their local collaborators Razakar-Albadr Al-Shams, carried out a brutal massacre of the country's best, brightest children and intellectuals. There is no other instance in the world of such a heinous massacre to make the whole nation incompetent.

From the beginning of December 1971, the news of the defeat of the barbaric Pakistani aggressors in the face of guerrilla attacks by the freedom fighters and a joint force of Indian allied forces on water, land and air began to spread. On 16 December, Pakistani forces were forced to surrender at the historic Racecourse Maidan (now Suhrawardy Udyan) in Dhaka. On March 7, the father of the nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, the architect of independence, called for independence, saying, "This time the struggle is for our liberation, this time the struggle is for freedom." The final victory of the bloody war of liberation of nine months was achieved. And the nation achieves the freedom of the dream of a thousand years.

Bangabandhu formally declared independence before being captured by the Pak army on the night of March 25, 1971 and at his call the Bengali nation unitedly jumped into the war of liberation. The final victory of the nation was achieved on 16 December in exchange for the loss of 3 million martyrs and 2 lakh mothers and sisters in the long nine-month armed people's war.
