Staff Correspondent: Students have raised 11 demands and proposals for safer roads across the country. The agitating students have announced to continue this movement till the demands raised are met.
At 11 a.m. on Wednesday (December 1) in the capital's Rampura, students raised these 11-point demands, proposals and road policies.
The 11 point demands of the students are:
1. The families of Naeem Hasan and Mainuddin Islam Durjoy, who were killed in a road accident, will have to pay proper compensation. Footover bridges will have to be constructed for pedestrian crossings at Gulistan and Rampura.
2. Government notification has to be issued to ensure half fare for students in public transport across the country. For this, no condition can be given including day and night or holiday. Increased bus fare will have to be withdrawn. BRTC buses will have to be increased on all routes.
3. We have to ensure the free movement of women in all types of transport. Be sure to use courtesy with them.
4. Unlicensed drivers must take strict legal action against the employer or individual. Effective measures need to be taken against BRTA corruption in vehicle registration, fitness activities and licensing.
5. Adequate lighting should be provided on all roads. The number of traffic police needs to be increased. The bribery of the traffic police must be stopped.
6. All buses have to be run by one group or company to stop competition on all routes. According to the bus, the owners have to make rules for the distribution of profit money.
7. The identity of the worker has to be confirmed in the appointment letter. Bus drivers and helpers will have to make arrangements for all public transport ticketing systems instead of contracts. Restrooms and toilets should be provided for the workers.
8. Car and driver working hours cannot be more than six hours in a row. The bus must have two drivers and two assistants. Adequate bus terminals need to be created. Appropriate training needs to be arranged for the workers.
10. The Road Transport Act needs to be reformed and its implementation ensured with the views of passengers and transport workers. Trucks and garbage trucks have to be scheduled from 12 pm to 5 am.
11. Effective measures have to be taken for drug prevention. Regular dope tests and counseling should be arranged.
Earlier, the students staged a blockade on the Rampura Bridge in the capital for the second day in a row to demand safe roads and protest against the killing of Mainuddin.
Students of various schools and colleges in the vicinity took positions on Rampura Bridge around 11 am on Wednesday. At this time, the students dropped the passengers from different public transports and stopped them.
