Papul's seat declared vacant

Staff Correspondent: Kuwaiti court sentenced member of parliament, MP Kazi Shahid Islam Papul's seat has been declared vacant.

A notification issued by the Jatiya Sangsad Secretariat on Monday (February 22nd) revoked his parliamentary seat and declared parliamentary constituency Laxmipur-2 vacant.

A statement from Law Branch-2 of the Legislative Support Wing, signed by Jafar Ahmed Khan, Senior Secretary of Bangladesh National Parliament Secretariatsaid, said that Papul has been sentenced to four years' rigorous imprisonment on charges of human trafficking and money laundering by a court in Kuwait. According to Article 66(2) (d) of the Constitution of Bangladesh, his seat (Lakshmipur-2) has become vacant from the date of pronouncement of the verdict.

Earlier, Speaker Dr. Shirin Sharmin Chowdhury discussed the verdict of Papul's case sent from Kuwait with concerned and reviewed the copy of the verdict.

It has been mentioned that in accordance with Rule 178 (4) of the Rules of Procedure of the Jatiya Sangsad of the People's Republic of Bangladesh, a notification has been issued regarding the vacancy of the seat of the Member of Parliament elected from 275 Laxmipur-2.

The notification of the Parliament Secretariat was published in the form of a gazette on Monday (February 22).

Kazi Shahid Islam Papul is the first MP in the history of Bangladesh who has lost his post after being detained abroad and convicted of a criminal offense.
