Opposition Leader Dr Md Shafiqur Rahman congratulated the newly elected Speaker of Parliament and urged him to uphold fairness, justice and a dynamic parliamentary environment in the interest of the nation.
Following the Speaker’s election, Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer thanked the people for electing their representatives through their votes, enabling them to speak in Parliament.
He paid tribute to those who lost their lives in the movements of 1947, 1952 and 1971, as well as individuals who were killed, imprisoned or persecuted during what he described as years of authoritarian rule.
Shafiqur Rahman also remembered the victims of Shapla Chattar incident and others who suffered oppression, imprisonment or injuries during various political struggles.
Recalling participants of the July mass uprising, he said their sacrifices made the formation of the current Parliament possible.
“This Parliament is not an ordinary one; it stands upon the blood of July,” he said, offering prayers for those who died and wishing a speedy recovery to those who were injured.
Congratulating the Speaker and Deputy Speaker, he noted that Bangladesh had completed 55 years of independence, but parliamentary democracy had functioned effectively only for limited periods.
“Most of the time Parliament became ineffective under the grip of fascism,” he said, adding that many past office-holders had failed to ensure justice for Parliament, the country and its people.
Expressing confidence in the new leadership, Shafiqur Rahman said he hoped the Speaker would treat both treasury and opposition benches equally and allow all members to speak for the welfare of the nation.
He also urged the Speaker to ensure that Parliament does not become a platform for character assassination, but rather a forum for meaningful debate focused on public welfare.
Shafiqur Rahman further expressed hope that the presence of many young lawmakers would make the House more vibrant and productive, with new members learning from experienced parliamentarians.
