High Court's anger over BTRC on Al Jazeera issue

Staff Reporter: The High Court has expressed anger over the Bangladesh Telecommunications Regulatory Commission (BTRC) over Al Jazeera documentary, "All the Prime Minister's Men."

The court expressed displeasure over the hearing on Wednesday (February 10).

Senior Judge Mozibur Rahman Miah questioned why the video was not removed from the social networking site earlier, “Now that millions of people at home and abroad have watched it, there’s no point in removing it,”,he added.

"Why couldn’t the BTRC take steps to address the issue in line with their authority?" the judge asked.

The court's question is that millions of people around the world have already seen Al Jazeera's report. What has the BTRC done so far. The concerned authority should have taken necessary steps but it remained inactive instead,

The High Court also commented that removing its contents now would not make a difference.

Earlier, questioning the acceptability of the writ seeking directives to ban the broadcasting of Al Jazeera, the High Court appointed six amici curiae to comment on whether the court can issue such an order. The amici curiae (friends of the court) are AJ Mohammad Ali, Kamal Ul Alam, Abdul Matin Khasru, Fida M Kamal, Prabir Niyogi and Dr Shahdin Malik.

The virtual High Court bench of Justice Md Mozibur Rahman Miah and Justice Md Kamrul Hossain Mollah passed the order on Wednesday.

The writ petition was filed by Anamul Kabir Emon. He also sought an order in the petiton to remove the report titled ‘All the Prime Minister’s Men’ broadcast by Al Jazeera on YouTube, Facebook and Twitter.
