Saudi-expatriate woman abandons 8-month-old at airport

Staff Correspondent: A Bangladeshi expatriate female worker has left her 8-month-old daughter at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport this morning.The Saudi returnee abandoned her child at around 8:00am on early Friday, said Alamgir Hossain Shimul, additional superintendent of Armed Police Battalion (APBn).

Alamgir Hossain said, the woman arrived in Bangladesh from Saudi Arabia at 2am (April 2). She collected her baggage and waited until morning. The woman left her baby girl alone at the airport at about 8:00am.

He said the baby would be about 7 or 8 months old. A co-passenger named Asma Akter,told officials that the woman got married in Saudi Arabia and had the baby; but now they are divorced. The motherdid not want to take the child to her house

The child is in police custody and her family is being searched by the Airport Armed Police Battalion.

Alamgir Hossain said that if the child cannot be returned to her mother, they will take help of Ministry of Expatriates' Welfare and Overseas Employment or Brac NGO to rehabilitate her."We are trying to get her back to her family."
