Strict Shutdown for a storm to subside

PM instructs to provide aid for those in need

With Covid-19 worsening conditions in the country as Bangladesh hits the highest recorded single-day infections, the government has decided to impose strict nationwide lockdown following Thursday July 1, in an attempt to abate the ongoing crisis.

In a Cabinet meeting on Monday, it was decided that movement passes are not to be issued to strictly ensure that no one leaves their houses with the exception of emergency cases.

All modes of transportation are to be suspended, and army troops deployed from Border Guard Bangladesh will additionally assist the already existing law enforcement agencies to better enforce the lockdown.

In the meeting Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina spoke about the provision of food and monetary aid to the people who’ve turned temporarily jobless at the wake of the pandemic.

She instructed authorities from the Ministry of Disaster Management and Relief to make a list of, and provide aid to all those in need of it from the social safety net program of the government, regardless of whether they were in possession of any identity cards.

State Minister for Disaster Management and Relief Dr Md Enamur Rahman has informed of the already expended aid to more than 70 million people prior to the newly added 7 lakhs transport workers.

He additionally informed that everyone is to receive Tk500 in cash and food worth Tk1,500 under the program.

Cabinet Secretary Khandker Anwarul Islam has declared of the imposition of the country’s strict shutdown and mentioned that further details regarding the restrictions will be declared on Tuesday June 29.
