Five sentenced to death

Sun News Desk : A court in Dhaka sentenced five accused to death for killing a police constable at Motijheel in the capital. Besides, each of the five accused was fined Tk 1 lakh.

Apart from death sentences, the accused were given rigorous imprisonment for another seven years for hiding the dead body.

Tahsin Iftekhar, the 7th Additional Metropolitan Sessions Judge, Dhaka, pronounced the verdict on Tuesday (June 6, 2023).

The convicts are Ripon Nath Ghosh, Biswajit Chandra Das, Ibrahim Khalil alias Kosai Khalil, Ratan Chandra Das and Humayun Kabir.

Among the convicts, Biswajit, Ibrahim and Ratan were produced before the court prior to delivering the judgement, while the court issued arrest warrant against two other convicts as they have been absconding.

Public prosecutor Mahbubur Rahman said slain Badal Mia was in charge of controlling CCTV footage of Ganajagoron Mancha at Shahbagh in the capital.

On February 21, 2013, the convicts abducted Constable Badal Mia from his working place at Shahbagh in the capital and then strangled him at a place adjacent to Culvert Road at Motijheel. Then the killers dumped the body near T&T School and College with a view to hiding the body.

Later, Motijheel Police Station's sub-inspector Abdul Latif filed a case being the plaintiff.

On April 5, 2015, the Detective Branch (DB) submitted a chargesheet to a court accusing five people for the murder of Constable Badal Mia. Afterward, the court ordered trial of the accused framing charges against them. The court recorded the depositions of 25, out of 34, witnesses, during the trial of the case.
