Staff Reporter: Half million Bangladeshi workers have returned to the country in Corona. They have lost an average of 3 hundred thousand taka including salary and other benifits. where the average salary of male workers is about 2 hundred thousand taka and that of female workers is about 1 hundred thousand taka.

This information was given in a research report organized by Bangladesh Civil Society of Migration (BCSM) and Refugee and Migratory Movements Research Unit (Ramru) on Wednesday (August 11). Professor CR Abrar, BCSM Chair and Ramru Executive Director, presented the information of the study.

The study was conducted through interviews with 1,160 expatriate workers returning from six Middle Eastern countries.

According to the study, 48.6 percent of workers returning from February 2020 have lost their jobs. Of these, 51.4% are males and 31.8% are females. For those who were employed, the salary of 38.6 percent of the workers has decreased. And before returning to the country after February 2020, 7.6 percent of expatriate workers did not get regular salary. However, 92 percent of the workers did not lodge any complaint before returning.

According to the report, 73 percent of the workers have been forced to return to the country. Again, 29 percent of the workers could not return to the country on holiday. Of those who were forced to return, 15.6 percent lost their jobs, while 35.6 percent came back without jobs. However, after research, some of them may have returned to work, which did not come here. The destination country at the top of the list of lost workers is the United Arab Emirates. It is followed by Kuwait, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Oman and Bahrain.
