Matt Hancock resigns as Health Secretary

With the ongoing pandemic leaving the world in a dire state, as millions face the fatality the virus brings, it is no surprise that to abate and avoid the effects of Covid-19, we must follow health regulations.

Britain’s Health Secretary Matt Hancock was seen breaking the Covid-19 health regulations as he was caught embracing his aide Gina Coladangelo inside the Department of Health on May 6.

Photos of the minister breaking the health code were released by The Sun newspaper on Friday June 25, and as a result caused outrage among Hancock’s colleagues an the general public living under lockdown.

Many fellow Conservative Party members along with those in the opposing Labour Party, and the general public suffering the consequences that Covid has brought upon them, have requested for Hancock to be sacked.

On Saturday June 26, Hancock, 42, sent a letter of resignation to Prime Minister Boris Johnson.

Hancock, in the letter mentions how they “owe it to people who have sacrificed so much in this pandemic” along with how he has let them down ‘by breaching the guidance’.

He announced via a video posted on Twitter, "I understand the enormous sacrifices that everybody in this country has made, that you have made, and those of us who make these rules have got to stick by them and that's why I have got to resign."

As a response to the letter Prime Minister Boris Johnson stated that he was ‘grateful’ for Hancock’s services and believes that his “contribution to public service is far from over."

Hancock’s resignation from the post has now been followed up by Sajid Javid being appointed to serve as the new Secretary of State for Health and Social Care.

Javid, who has returned to the cabinet 16 months after he resigned as chancellor after rejecting the prime minister's order to fire his team of aides, said in a tweet that he is ‘Honoured’ to be appointed in his new position and looks forward to serving the country ‘from the Cabinet once again.’

Britain has one of the highest official death tolls from Covid-19 globally, with a recorded 128,000 deaths. However, it is also one of the few countries that is far ahead with its inoculation initiative with 84% of its adults having one dose of the vaccine and 61% having both.
