Willing to establish 'new path' with US: Nicolas Maduro

nternational Desk: Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro said that he was willing to "turn the page" with the US under President Joe Biden. He was calling for a "new path" after years of tension with Donald Trump. On Saturday (January 23), he expressed interest in building the relationship.

"We look forward to a new path in our relationship with the Joe Biden administration, based on mutual respect, dialogue, communication and understanding," the leftist leader told his supporters. He said he is interested in building a new relationship with the new administration in the United States.

The Trump administration imposed multiple economic sanctions on Venezuela in 2019, including a ban on fuel, and sought to overthrow his socialist government by branding Maduro a dictator.

After years of ifrosty relations, diplomatic ties between Caracas and Washington broke on January 23, 2019, when the US government recognized opposition leader Juan Guido as Venezuela's interim government.

Maduro congratulated Biden after the US presidential election last November. Reiterating the same statement made in December, Maduro said, "Venezuela is ready for good relations and dialogue with the US government and people."
