Ugandan military operation in Somalia killed 189 al-Shabaab militants

Staff Reporter: Uganda People's Defense Forces claimed killing 189 al-Shabaab fighters in an operation in Somalia. on Friday.

On Friday (January 22), the WPDF announced the operation. News Anadolu. In a “surprise, swift” attack Ugandan military has killed 189 suspected Islamic extremists with al-Shabab.the operation targeted a meeting of this militant's arm group.

Lt. Col. Dio Akiki,spokesman of Ugandan army said a contingent of the WPDF under the African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM) carried out an operation and killed all these members of al-Shabab.“This is the biggest number of al-Shabaab fighters killed in a day," he added.

The Ugandan military carried out the operation in Al - Shabaab's hideouts in village of Sigaale village, 99 kilometers southwest of the Somali capital, Mugadisu.The mission involved both ground and aerial assaults.

The WPDF has been working in peacekeeping missions in Somalia for the past 10 years and is set to withdraw from Somalia by the end of the year and hand over responsibility for the country's security to Somali forces.
