International Desk: Australia faces the worst floods in the last 60 years. Authorities plan to evacuate about 16,000 people from Sydney's western suburbs due to the floods.
Reuters reported on Monday (March 22). It is learned that at least 2,000 people have already been evacuated from the low-lying areas.
Rivers in the Australian state of New South Wales are flowing above the danger line due to incessant rains over the past three days, the report said. This state of Australia is the most populous. The local emergency services said in a statement that flooding is likely to be higher than any floods since Nov 1961.
Television and social media footage showed the fast-moving floodwaters washed away vehicles and farm animals, including houses. The drenching rain expected to continue for the next few days.
Earlier, water started overflowing from the Waragamba Dam, one of Sydney's water supply centers, on Saturday afternoon local time; Authorities warned that the water could merge with the swollen river due to rains. Rivers across the state of New South Wales have burst their banks amid three days of unrelenting rain.
A small tornado also damaged more than 30 homes in the western part of the city; Emergency officials said many trees had been uprooted and power had been cut off.
