International Desk: 100 million people have received vaccines in two months. There was talk of success in dealing with the coronavirus. But Joe Biden, the new president of the United States, spoke of another old 'virus' in America. That is racism and hate crimes. Which is never so loud in this country.
Biden gave a brief but emphatic speech at Emory University on Friday (March 19th) after speaking with bereaved, angry, and concerned representatives of the Asian-American community in Georgia. He admitted without any hesitation that violence against Asian-Americans was on the rise in America. In his words, "America can no longer accept incidents of hatred and racism against foreigners."
Robert A. Long, a 21-year-old white man, shot and killed eight people at three massage parlors and spas in Atlanta last week. Many protested when investigators tried to use economic anxiety and sexual addiction as reasons. That being said, the incident is something more than that.
Six of the dead were Asian American women. Many say it is based on hatred of Asian Americans and women. President Biden also said on the day, "The poison of this hatred has been haunting America for a long time. Many times America remain silent about these. But to remain silent means to accept.Something has to be done.'
“The president and I will not be silent. We will not stand by. We will always speak out against violence, hate crimes and discrimination, wherever and whenever it occurs,” the vice president Kamala Harris said in her remarks at Emory.
According to private sources, 3800 cases of hate speech against the inhabitants of the Asian American and Pacific islands have been recorded in the last one year. Incidents of physical or verbal assault, discrimination or denial of civil rights. Social workers claim that in many cases no complaint is lodged. The incidents continue in secret.
President Biden specifically mentioned how heartbreaking it was to hear about the loss of relatives in the Atlanta massacre. He did not name his predecessor Donald Trump on the question of spreading racism. Trump has repeatedly called the coronavirus as “China virus." Last year, Trump had to face strong opposition. Biden said on the day, "“We have always known: words have consequences. This is the coronavirus. Full stop.”
