International Desk: Magdalena Anderson resigned just hours after being approved as Sweden's first female prime minister.
Magdalena Anderson, leader of the Social Democrats, decided to resign after the ruling coalition partner Green Party withdrew its support in the afternoon on Wednesday (November 24).
Magdalena Anderson told a news conference after her resignation on Wednesday (November 24th) that she would return to the post of Prime Minister with the support of her allies in parliament. She said, “There is a constitutional practice that when a party in a coalition government leaves the government, the government resigns. I do not want to lead a government whose legitimacy is in question.
The government's own budget proposal was not passed due to overwhelming support for a proposal put forward by the opposition. Opposition parties include the right-wing Sweden Democrats. Sweden's third-largest party is at the heart of the neo-Nazi movement. The opposition's budget proposal received 154 votes in favor and 143 against.
Earlier on Tuesday, Magdalena's Social Democrats struck a deal with Sweden's left-wing Green Party. This ensured the necessary support in Parliament for Magdalena Anderson. On Wednesday morning, a majority of members of the Swedish parliament voted for Anderson as the next prime minister. She became the first woman Prime Minister in the country's 100-year history.
The Green Party, meanwhile, said in a statement that it was the right decision to withdraw support from Magdalena Anderson after the budget was rejected in parliament. However, the left-wing party indicated that it could walk out of parliament on the budget issue, but that it could support the Green Party in a later vote of confidence in Magdalena Anderson.
However, Magdalena Anderson resigned on the day the Prime Minister was elected. The budget presented by him while he was the finance minister was rejected in the parliament by 154-143 votes on Wednesday. As a result, the ruling coalition partner, the Green Party, withdrew its support. Shortly afterward, Prime Minister Anderson resigned. However, she could have served as head of government until the next confidence vote.
Meanwhile, Norlen, speaker of Sweden's 349-member parliament, said he would discuss the situation with leaders of the eight parties. He will announce the next course of action on Thursday.
Magdalena Anderson served as finance minister in the government of outgoing Prime Minister Stephen Lofven. Following Lofvan's resignation, the speaker of parliament last week called on Magdalen Anderson to form a government. But he took a week to prove his majority in parliament. Negotiations with the Left on Wednesday morning confirmed the necessary support for Magdalen's party in parliament.
The Social Democrats-led minority alliance has been in power in Sweden since 2014. The other party in this alliance is the Green Party. However, Stephen Lofvan lost power after the Left Party withdrew its support from the coalition.
