Own Correspondent: Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina said that the overall capacity of the Bangladesh Meteorological Department has increased and is playing an important role in providing various term forecasts and warnings of various natural disasters caused by climate change and other extreme weather.

She said this in a message given on the occasion of 'World Meteorological Day-2024' on Saturday (March 23).
Expressing satisfaction to know that 'World Meteorological Day' is being celebrated in Bangladesh with due status along with the member states of the World Meteorological Organization, the Prime Minister said that this year's theme of the day 'At the Frontline of Climate Action' has been appropriate, timely and significant.

The Prime Minister said that Bangladesh is one of the countries that are at risk of various natural disasters. The Awami League government is determined to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals announced by the United Nations.
For this purpose, the government has taken various activities including 100-year delta plan, five-year plan with priority on climate change adaptation system. By gradually implementing these plans, Bangladesh will be able to achieve the status of an upper middle income country by 2030 and become a developed country in 2041.

She also said that the Awami League government has introduced modern technology and technology in the Bangladesh Meteorological Department in the past years to deal with natural disasters.
As a result of taking various effective measures in advance forecasting, the government is working to prevent environmental disasters, determine economic development supporting strategies, best use of natural resources, and build a climate change tolerant Bangladesh to overcome the challenges and effects of climate change.

Sheikh Hasina said that Bangladesh is the world's role model in disaster management. Bangladesh is playing a significant role in determining climate change policy at the international level as well.
Our government has strengthened research activities on agrometeorology including establishing 7 new agrometeorological observatories to improve the quality of agrometeorological forecasting services along with the existing meteorological observatories.

Besides, 5 meteorological surface observatories, 13 earthquake observation centers have been established. 3 satellite ground receiving stations have been installed.
Along with this, a modern Doppler radar has already been installed at Joydevpur for safe takeoff and landing of airplanes along with Kalbaisakhi and thunderstorm warnings and another Doppler radar is in progress at Rangpur.
