Sheikh Hasina won’t face mob violence if she returns: Zahed

Staff Repoter

Prime Minister’s Information and Broadcasting Adviser Dr Zahed Ur Rahman has said ousted prime minister Sheikh Hasina will face trial if she returns to Bangladesh, stressing that any action against her will follow due legal process.

He said Hasina would not be subjected to mob violence or any unlawful treatment upon her return, adding that the government would ensure the matter was handled through the justice system rather than revenge.

The adviser made the remarks at a press briefing on the progress of various government activities on Tuesday, October 27, in response to a question about Hasina’s possible return.

“If she comes, she will face trial. She is a convict sentenced to death. Once she arrives, whatever needs to happen under the legal process will happen,” he said.

Ur Rahman said repeatedly setting deadlines for Hasina’s return would only fuel speculation. He noted that if one date passed without her return and another was subsequently announced, the same debate would begin again.

Reiterating the government’s position on her security, he said Hasina would not face mob violence or any other unlawful situation. Any proceedings against her, he added, must take place through the established judicial system.

Citing former president Hussain Muhammad Ershad as an example, the adviser said Ershad had remained in Bangladesh after the fall of his regime in 1990 rather than fleeing the country. He later spent time in prison and won five parliamentary seats, while his party secured 35 seats, he added.

Government Says It Works to Prevent Crimes

Asked why the authorities could not prevent crimes before they occurred, including attacks on the Communist Party of Bangladesh (CPB) office, Ur Rahman said the government had law enforcement agencies and intelligence services working to prevent criminal activities.

He added that many potential incidents were thwarted in advance, although the public might not be aware of those efforts.

No Official Statement on Prime Minister’s India Visit

Responding to a question about the prime minister’s possible visit to India, the adviser said the government had made no official announcement on the matter.

He urged people not to speculate about the visit in the absence of an official statement.
