Workers leave Gazipur highway, traffic returns to normal

Staff Repoter

Workers in Mouchak, Gazipur, withdrew their blockade of the Dhaka-Tangail highway on Tuesday afternoon after nearly three hours, allowing traffic to gradually return to normal.

The workers cleared the highway at 1:50pm after demonstrating to demand higher wages and improved benefits.

According to police and workers, employees of Essential Clothing Limited began protesting outside their factory in the morning before marching towards the Kaliakair-Phulbaria road.

During the demonstration, the workers pressured nearby factories to declare holidays and threw bricks and stones at the gates of several factories. Several factories along the road subsequently announced holidays to help control the situation.

The workers later moved to the Dhaka-Tangail highway in Mouchak and blocked the road, causing traffic disruption.

Kaliakair Police Station Officer-in-Charge Shahidul Islam said the workers had withdrawn their blockade and that traffic was gradually returning to normal.
