A Dhaka court on Monday ordered the trial of former prime minister Sheikh Hasina and 33 others in a murder case over the killing of truck driver Md Hossain during the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement in July 2024.
Judge Md Rabiul Alam of Dhaka Special Judge Court-4 passed the order on October 26 and set November 25 for the next hearing.
Hossain was shot dead in the Chand Udyan area of Mohammadpur during the student-led movement. His mother, Reena Begum, filed a murder case with Mohammadpur Police Station on August 31, 2024.
According to the charge sheet, Hossain was shot on July 19, 2024, while returning home after leaving his truck in Gabtoli.
Following an investigation, Sub-Inspector Akramuzzaman submitted a charge sheet against Hasina and 33 others to the court on November 23, 2025.
Of the 34 accused, former state minister for information and communication technology Zunaid Ahmed Palak, former lawmaker Sadek Khan, Furkan Hossain and Shahjahan Khan are currently in jail. Ten others are out on bail, while the remaining 20 are absconding.
Besides Hasina, the absconding accused include Awami League General Secretary and former Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader, former Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal, former Foreign Minister Hasan Mahmud, former minister Jahangir Kabir Nanak, and banned Bangladesh Chhatra League President Saddam Hossain and General Secretary Sheikh Wali Asif Inan.
According to court records, arrest warrants were issued against the absconding accused on January 26.
The court had initially scheduled October 8 for a hearing on charge framing. However, two accused in jail, Sajjad Hossain and Naimul Hasan Russell, could not be produced before the court that day because they had hearings at the International Crimes Tribunal.
As a result, the prison authorities were unable to bring them to court, prompting the court to reschedule the hearing for October 26.
