Staff Correspondent: Road anarchy must be stopped. The treatment of passengers by road transport workers is unacceptable. As the road transport authorities have increased bus fares on the pretext of increasing diesel and kerosene prices, the workers are collecting more from the passengers. As a result, ordinary passengers are being harassed to get to their destination by bus every day. If they protest, they are subjected to indescribable torture. Jatiya Party Chairman and Deputy Leader of the Opposition Ghulam Mohammad Quader MP said that the workers were behaving indecently towards the students and women.
He made the remarks in a statement sent on Tuesday (November 23rd).
He said the government had increased the price of diesel and kerosene by Tk 15 per liter to Tk 80 from the night of November 3. At the same time, road transport owners and workers are harassing crores of passengers through unannounced transport strikes. However, no one has the right to call a strike without notice. After that, the transport fare was increased through negotiations with the government. Many people are expressing their displeasure over the issue as it is a staged drama. Even so, owning one is still beyond the reach of the average person.
He further said that the students are being forced to collect half of the full rent instead of half. On the other hand, oil prices have started to fall in the world market, but the government does not seem to have any plans to reduce oil prices. With the rise in oil prices, the cost of essential commodities is skyrocketing on the pretext of rising transport costs. That is why ordinary people are struggling to make ends meet.
In a statement, Jatiya Party chairman Golam Mohammad Quader said, "Oil prices have started dropping in the world market, so the government has to take a quick decision to reduce oil prices." Besides, the anarchy of the road has to be reduced with the fare of public transport. Also need to ensure half fare for students.
