International Desk: The army has regained power after a military coup in Myanmar. At the same time, Myanmar's military-backed Vice President Mint Suu Kyi has taken over as acting president.
He declared a state of emergency for a year after taking power. Earlier on Monday (February 1st), the army detained top party leaders, including President Win Mint and ruling party leader Aung San Suu Kyi.
Suu Kyi's party, the National League for Democracy (NLD), won a landslide victory in the November 8 general election. A majority in parliament requires 322 seats, although the NLD gets 346.The first session of the newly elected parliament was supposed to held on Monday February (1).. Before that the Myanmar's military has carried out the coup.
Meanwhile, mobile internet and telephone connections have been disrupted in major cities. Broadcasting on state television is also off air.
For the past week or so, there have been rumors that the army will return to power. Myanmar has had a powerful military for nearly five decades. Suu Kyi's party, the NLD, won the election in November last year. However, the army has alleged rigging in the election.
The military said there was a massive voting frauds and they would hold a new election at the end of a one-year state of emergency.
