International Desk: Kamala Harris, Vice President elect, has resigned from the Senate on Monday (January 18th). She resigned two days before being sworn in as vice president on January 20. Kamala is the first female, first Black and first South Asian woman vice president of the United States.
"It was an honor to serve as your senator," she wrote in a letter to California citizens after her resignation.
"This is not the end of the story," she wrote in a sub-editorial in the San Francisco Chronicle. I am resigning from the Senate today in preparation for taking the oath.
With Harris resigning, Democratic Senator Chuck Sumer will be the leader of the majority in the Senate. As a result, Democrats will regain control of the Senate for another six years.
Kamala further wrote, ‘I am resigning from the US Senate. But it's not the end, it's the beginning. '
Alex Padilla, Secretary of State for California, replaces Harris in the Senate. He is the first senator of Latin descent from California.
Harris was elected the first senator in 2016 after Donald Trump came to power. Kamala Harris will be sworn in on Wednesday by the country's Supreme Court Judge Sonia Sotomeyer.
