48 killed in Sudan's Darfur inter -ethnic clashes

Staff Reporter: At least 83 people have been killed in in clashes between different ethnic groups in Darfur state of Sudan. Al Jazeera quoted state media as saying.

The Sudan News Agency reported on Sunday (January 18th) that 47 people had been killed in an armed attack in al-Zainaina in the western province of Darfur, leaving 98 people injured.

The violence broke out early Monday between the powerful Arab Rizeigat tribe and the Fallata, a cattle and camel herding people who trace their roots to the Fulani of western Africa. The incident comes two weeks after the UN and African Union peacekeeping missions in Darfur have ended operations .

several homes were torched in the attack, According to UN sources. Darfur has been the scene of bloody clashes since 2003. Where 3 lakh people died and 25 lakh people were displaced.Key issues behind the fightings include land ownership and access to water.

Government imposed a state wide curfew and said that troop reinforcements would be sent to the area. A delegation has been sent to investigate said Prime Minister Abdalla Hamdok.
