Facebook blocked in Myanmar

International Desk: Facebook service has been blocked in allegations of creating instability in Myanmar. The military junta considers social media platform is disturbing the restoration of stability in the country.

The country's communications ministry said in a statement that fake news and misinformation are spreading confusion among the people, that is why the country's current military government has taken this decision.

It has been said that the Facebook and other messaging services will be shut down in Myanmar till February 7. Internet providers and telecom companies will have to shut down Facebook in accordance with this decision.

Out of more than 50 million people, about 27 million are Facebook users in Myanmar. The popular social media Facebook has a complicated history blamed by Myanmar for not being sincere enough to curbe spreading misinformation, rather it helped to amplify the call for violence.

On Monday, the military, led by General Min Aung Hlaing seized power, detained the country’s elected leader, Aung San Suu Kyi, and declared a state of emergency, just before the first session of the new government in Myanmar's parliament to take place. Aung San Suu Kyi and President Win Mint were arrested at midnight on Sunday. At the same time a one-year state of emergency was declared.
