Enayet claims '80% Bus Owners are Poor'

Staff Reporter: '80 percent of bus owners in Dhaka are poor, some people run their families with one bus. How will they handle the loss' said Khandaker Enayet Ullah, secretary-general of the Transport Owners' Association.

He said they would have to decide how the government would compensate them if they rented half.

He made the remarks after a meeting of BRTA officials with leaders of bus owners 'associations and workers' federations at the BRTA office here on Saturday (November 27).

Enayet Ullah said, 'We want to accept the demands of the students. But many issues have to be resolved first. We have made some suggestions and the solution will be decided later."

Everyone on the bus will say they are students, he said. Many people will make a new ID card to take advantage of this. We also have to see how the government will solve it.

Enayet Ullah said that if half rent is introduced, nothing can be done immediately about the total loss of subsidy. Time is needed, it is not possible without a task force. A unanimous decision has to be taken by forming a task force with all the concerned organizations. The task force will determine the amount of loss in half rent.
