Eight killed in Lightning strikes

Sun News Desk : Eight people have been killed and several others injured in lightning strikes in six districts across the country on Thursday.

Among deceased, two were killed in Chapainawabganj, two in Satkhira, one each in Jashore, Meherpur, Rajbari and Jhenaidah.

Chapainawabganj : Two people were killed and two others injured at Shibganj upazila. The deceased were- Shahin Ali, 20, son of Abdul Quader of Gopanagar; and Asim Ali, 12, son of Harun Ali of Sharatnagar village under Shyampur union at the upazila.

Locals said two people were killed and two others were injured in lightning strikes in Mastan Bazar area at about 2pm. Later, the injured were sent to Rajshahi Medical College Hospital (RMCH).

Officer-in-Charge (OC) Shibganj Police Station Chowdhury Zubayer Ahmed said police visited the spot and recovered the bodies.

Satkhira : Two people, Kamrul Islam, 36, of Panchraki village; and Abdullah Molla, 34, of Biharinagar village, were killed in lightning strikes at Panchraki in Kalaroa upazila and Biharinagar in Satkhira sadar upazila in the afternoon.

OC of Kalaroa Police Station Mostafizur Rahman said that Kamrul was harvesting Boro paddy from a nearby Beel. At this time, he died on the spot following a lightning strike.

OC of Satkhira Sadar Police Station Abu Jihad Fakrul Alam Khan said that Abdullah Molla of Biharinagar village was returning home from the field. He was seriously injured in a lightning strike when he came to the courtyard. He died soon.

Rajbari : A man was killed in a lightning strike at Goalanda upazila at about 5.30pm while he was returning from a vegetable field after picking bitter gourd. He died on the way to Goalanda Upazila Health Complex. The deceased was identified as Sahidul Mridha, 32, son of Jamal Mridha, of Mridha para at the upazila.

Jhenaidah : A farmer, Sujon Hossain, 35, son of Ramiz Uddin of Kubirkhali village under Madhuhati union at Jhenaidah sadar upazila, was killed in a lightning strike in Khalpara area of the village in the afternoon when Sujan went to a field for agricultural work. He died on the spot when lightning struck him.

OC of Jhenaidah Sadar Police Station Sheikh Mohammad Sohel Rana confirmed the matter.
