Army coup in Myanmar, Rohingya situation will get worse: UN

International Desk: Myanmar Military has seized power in a coup against the elected government of National League for Democracy (NLD).

Following the coup on Monday (January 1), most of the party leaders including Aung San Suu Kyi were detained in early morning raids.A state of emergency is declared for the next one year.

The United Nations has expressed concern over the future of millions of Rohingya Muslims in Myanmar's Rakhine state. According to the United Nations, the military coup will make the situation of Rohingyas in Rakhine State worse. Their misery will be greatly increased.

"There are still 600,000 Rohingya in Myanmar's Rakhine state," said UN spokeswoman Stephane Dujarric. Of these, 1 lakh 20 thousand are in captivity in the camps. They cannot move freely. Their access to basic health care and education is very limited. We fear that this new military coup in the country will further aggravate the situation of the Rohingyas stationed there."

“So our fear is that the events may make the situation worse for them,” he added.
