Myanmar's response is positive to start repatriation: Foreign Minister

Staff- Correspondent: Foreign Minister AK Abdul Momen said the Myanmar authority responded positively to start Rohingya repatriation with the next round of talks.

He was speaking to reporters after a program in the capital on Sunday (January 31st).

Foreign Minister Dr. Momen joined as the chief guest in a program organized by Bangladesh University of Professionals (BUP) in the capital.

He said the scheduled Director-General level meeting with Myanmar will be held in the first week of February this year.

He further said there had been a secretary-level meeting with Myanmar. Several proposals have been made on our behalf. They said they would take back some Rohingya as per the bilateral agreement signed with Bangladesh in 2017. We have already handed over them a list of 840,000 Rohingyas. They have only verified 42,000. There will be a detailed discussion. We want the repatriation process to begin soon through the tripartite talks held among Bangladesh, Myanmar and China.

The minister expressed hope by saying, as history says Myanmar took back their nationals in 1978 and 1992, this time also they will fulfill their commitment.
