Staff - Correspondent: Bangladesh has expressed hope that democracy and peace will prevail in Myanmar after the military coup. At the same time, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said that the ongoing work on the issue of Rohingya repatriation will be taken forward.
This was stated in a message from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Bangladesh on Monday (February 1). Earlier in the day, Myanmar's military seized power by arresting Aung San Suu Kyi and other senior NLD leaders.
The message from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said, 'Bangladesh believes in democratic values. Hopefully, the democratic process and constitutional process will be maintained in Myanmar.'
Mentioning that Bangladesh as a close neighbor and friend wants to see peace and stability in Myanmar, the message said, "We want to move forward with Myanmar in a way that benefits both countries." We have been working with Myanmar to ensure the voluntary, safe and sustainable repatriation of Rohingya refugees. We want that process to continue.
The world media has been speculating for days that Myanmar's military could seize power. Meanwhile, on Monday morning, the country's leader Aung San Suu Kyi, President Win Mint and other leaders of the party were taken away by the army. Later, the army announced the overthrow of Suu Kyi's government.
Suu Kyi's party won a landslide victory in last November's general election. But the country's powerful military has condemned the election and rejected the result.
Myanmar's military has been disrupting telephone, mobile and internet services since the military coup. Army members are patrolling important cities, including the country's capital.
