'Bangladesh will be a modern welfare state'-President

Sun News Desk: The President hopes that Bangladesh will be able to establish itself as a modern welfare state through the joint efforts of all. Abdul Hamid, The President expressed this expectation in a message given today (Friday) on the occasion of 'National Social Service Day-2021' on Saturday (January 2).

He said the Ministry of Social Welfare has been providing relentless services to the destitute, poor, neglected, disadvantaged, backward and disabled people of the country and is also playing an important role in the overall development of the country through poverty alleviation and social security by turning them into human resources. The President also said that the real poor should be able to enjoy the benefits of these government programs.

Welcoming the initiative of the Ministry of Social Welfare to celebrate 'National Social Service Day-2021', the President said that the theme of this year has been justified in the light of Sustainable Development Goals in building a Hunger and Poverty Free Society.

Abdul Hamid said the work of rebuilding war-torn Bangladesh started soon after independence under the leadership of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. He undertook various welfare programs giving priority to the development of destitute and helpless people and strengthening social security.

The President said Bangabandhu set a unique precedent in the country and in the world by introducing interest free loan program in 1974. Following this, the government is implementing massive activities under the social security program for the development of the disabled, helpless and less privileged people. The rates and scope of various social security benefits are constantly expanding to build a sustainable social safety net.

Stating that all these programs are playing an important role in meeting the basic needs of the poor people of the country, social security and empowerment of the people especially women, the President wished success to the programs taken on the occasion of 'National Social Service Day-2021'.
