The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences announced the name of the winner in Stockholm on Thursday.
The Royal Swedish Academy said Ernaux was honoured “for the courage and clinical acuity with which she uncovers the roots, estrangements and collective restraints of personal memory”,

The prize carries a cash award of 10 million Swedish kronor (nearly $900,000), which will be handed out on December 10.
Last year’s literature prize went to the Tanzanian-born, UK-based writer Abdulrazak Gurnah, whose novels explore the impact of migration on individuals and societies.
Annie Arnaux was born on September 1, 1940. Her literature is mainly autobiographical and related to sociology. She is the 17th woman to win this award.

Each award carries a certificate and gold medal worth 1 crore krona or 900,000 US dollars. The award has been given 609 times between 1901 and 2021.
