'61% work of Bangabandhu Tunnel completed'

Staff Correspondent: The construction of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman tunnel project has been completed 61 percent of said the Awami League General Secretary and Minister for Road Transport and Bridges, Obaidul Quader.

The minister made the remarks at a press conference at his official residence after the virtual inauguration of the second tube excavation of the Bangabandhu Tunnel on Saturday (December 12th).

The bridge minister said the Bangabandhu tunnel under construction at the bottom of the Karnafuli river is the first tunnel under the river in South Asia. Excavation of the second tube of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Tunnel under construction at a cost of Taka 10,400 crore has started today. So far, 61 percent of the tunnel project has been completed.

Obaidul Quader said that with the construction of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Tunnel, Chittagong city will be developed in one city and two town model like Shanghai river of China. Due to the tunnel, modern communication system will be developed between Dhaka-Chittagong and Cox's Bazar as well as connection with Asian Highway.

Land Minister Saifuzzaman Chowdhury Javed, Cabinet Secretary Khandaker Anwarul Islam, Secretary of the Bridges Department, Belayet Hossain, Project Director Harun Ur Rashid and other officials of the project and members of the Navy and people's representatives were present in the virtual platform at the time.
