Poorly maintained vehicles and unsafe highways are the cause of accidents nationwide each year. According to police statistics, about 20,000 road accidents occur in the country every year. More than two thousand people lost their lives in it, costing the East African nation 5% of its gross domestic product each year, according to a UN report in 2018.
