3 killed in Crimea bridge blast

International Desk: Three people have been killed after a truck bomb explosion that caused a fire and the collapse of a section of a key bridge linking the Crimean peninsula with mainland Russia, Russian officials said.

The Investigative Committee of Russia said in a statement that the victims were believed to be passengers of a vehicle on the bridge where the explosion occurred. The bodies of a woman and a man were recovered from the water. Efforts are now underway to identify them.

The statement also said that the identity of the owner of the vehicle, through which the bomb blast, has been ascertained.

“According to preliminary information, the automobile part of the Crimean bridge from the side of the Taman Peninsula, a truck was blown up, which caused seven fuel tanks to ignite on a train heading towards the Crimea peninsula. As a result, two lanes partially destroyed.” the committee said.

The Crimean Bridge is the only land link between Russia and Crimea. The Crimean Peninsula is considered a symbol of Russian hegemony. It is also key to sustaining Russian military operations in the south. If the Crimean bridge becomes unusable, it will become more difficult to transport goods and military equipment to the island.

The Crimean bridge is divided into two parts as road and rail. There are two parts in the road section. The Crimean Bridge is basically made by combining three bridges side by side.
