Rights activists win Nobel Peace Prize

International Desk: The Nobel Peace Prize has been awarded to a human rights activist and two human rights organizations for their significant contribution to peace. The Norwegian Nobel Committee announced the names of the winners on Friday.

The Norwegian Nobel Committee said it has been decided to award this year's Nobel Peace Prize to human rights advocate Ales Bialiatski from Belarus, Russian human rights organization Memorial and Ukrainian human rights organization Center for Civil Liberties.

The committee said on laureates that Nobel Peace Prize laureates represent civil society in their respective countries. They have been criticizing the rulers and campaigning for the protection of the fundamental rights of the citizens for many years. The Nobel Peace Prize laureates are also lauded for their efforts to document issues such as war crimes, human rights abuses and abuse of power.

The Norwegian Nobel Committee is responsible for selecting the Nobel Peace Prize. All Nobel Prizes are announced from Stockholm of Sweden, but the Peace Prize is announced from Oslo of Norway, according to Alfred Nobel's will.

The Nobel Peace Prize, worth 10 million Swedish crowns, or about $900,000, will be presented in Oslo on December 10, the anniversary of the death of Swedish industrialist Alfred Nobel, who founded the awards in his 1895 will.

The Nobel Peace Prize has been awarded 102 times from 1901 to 2021. Among them, the Nobel Peace Prize was awarded 25 times to various organizations in recognition of their important contributions to the world's critical issues.

According to a will, made by the Swedish scientist Alfred Nobel in 1895, the Nobel Prize was introduced. The first prize was awarded in 1901. The awards are presented in five categories to individuals and organizations around the world for unique research, innovation and humanitarian activities. The subjects are Physics, Chemistry, Medicine, Literature and Peace. Although the Nobel Prize in Economics has been awarded since 1969.

Each award carries a certificate and gold medal worth 1 crore krona or 900,000 US dollars. The award has been given 609 times between 1901 and 2021.
