US investment will continue

Sun News Desk: The United States is the largest source of foreign direct investment in Bangladesh which will continue to assist in future, said US Ambassador to Bangladesh Peter Haas.

He said this while visiting 584 megawatt gas based combined cycle power plant of Unique Meghnaghat Power Limited (UMPL) at Sonargaon in Narayanganj on Wednesday. The power plant is likely to go for commercial power generation in October this year.

Peter Haas said the US holds No. 1 position regarding the foreign direct investment in Bangladesh. The new investments are coming day by day. The investment will also continue in future because of favourable investment climate in Bangladesh.

He said the American companies are very much keen to invest in Bangladesh, but the country's regulatory authority needs to be stronger.

Unique Meghnaghat Power Limited (UMPL) Managing Director Chowdhury Nafiz Sharafat, UMPL Chairman Md Noor Ali, US Embassy's Head of Financial Unit Joseph Giblin, company's Chief Executive Officer Zahir Uddin Molla, Gas Power's CEO for South Asia Dinesh Nanda, Sonargaon Upazila Nirbahi Officer Rezwan Ul Islam, and Sonargaon Police Station's officer-in-charge Mahbub Alam, among others, were present.
