Writ against Al-Jazeera: Amici Curiae's opinion completed

Staff-Reporter: Amici Curiae's (friends of court) opinion hearing on the writ petition that sought High Court directive to ban broadcast of Al Jazeera, has been completed.Total six amici curiae gave their legal opinions on Monday February 15.

Lawyers AJ Mohammad Ali, Kamalul Alam, Prabir Niyogi, Fida M Kamal, Abdul Matin Khasru and Shahdin Malik have given their views on the writ petition to stop broadcasting the Qatar-based television channel.

Justice Md. Mojibur Rahman Mia and Justice. They gave their opinion in the virtual high court bench comprising of justice Md Mozibur Rahman Miah and Justice Md Kamrul Hossain Mollah.

After holding the bench adjourned the proceedings till February 17. Attorney General AM Amin Uddin will address the issue on Wednesday (February 17). The High Court will then set a date for the order. The High Court issued the order on Monday (February 15).

Lawyer Enamul Kabir Emon appeared for the writ petition. He was accompanied by lawyer Farzana Shaila.

On February 8, a writ petition was filed in the High Court seeking directions to remove the 'All the Prime Minister's Men' report from Facebook and YouTube and ban Al Jazeera in Bangladesh.

Lawyer Enamul Kabir Emon filed the writ petition. In the writ petition, the Secretary of Posts and Telecommunications, Secretary of Information and Technology, Chairman of BTRC, Inspector General of Police and others were made defendants.

Later on Wednesday (February 10), the High Court appointed six amici curiae to hear comments on the removal of Al Jazeera's report. He also fixed February 15 for the hearing. A hearing was held today in its continuation.

The six amici curiae are former law minister Abdul Matin Khasru, former attorney general AJ Mohammad Ali, Fida M Kamal, Shahdin Malik, Kamalul Alam and Prabir Niyogi.

Addressing the Bangladesh Telecommunications Regulatory Commission (BTRC) at the February 10 writ hearing, the court said that billions of people around the world have already seen the Al Jazeera report, what has the BTRC done so far..

On February 1, Al Jazeera broadcast an investigative report on Bangladesh. Which caused a massive backlash. Officially this report was stronglycondemned as“false and defamatory”, a “Smear Campaign” instigated by extremists and their allies, to destroy the stability of the country.
