The prosecution on Monday appealed to the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court seeking to enhance the 10-year prison sentence handed down to Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal president and former information minister Hasanul Haq Inu to the death penalty.
The appeal was filed with the relevant branch of the Appellate Division, International Crimes Tribunal prosecutor Gazi MH Tamim confirmed.
Earlier, the International Crimes Tribunal sentenced Inu to 10 years in prison in a case over crimes against humanity committed during the July mass uprising.
The prosecution challenged the tribunal’s sentence, arguing that the punishment was inadequate considering the gravity and extent of the offences proved against Inu.
It sought the maximum punishment, saying the nature and seriousness of the crimes established in the case warranted the death penalty.
